CSC 112: Digital Citizen of the 21st Century: 2 hours.

Description

Study of computing and ways it shapes and influences 21st century citizens and society. Provides basic understanding of computing capability and limitations for more informed discussion of issues. Topics may include: news, entertainment, media, identity, communication, relationships, financial transactions, intellectual property, privacy, security.

Goals for CSC 112 are:

  1. To help the student become a responsible citizen in the areas of technology
  2. To give the students a basic understanding of the field of computing

Course outcomes for CSC 112 are:

Upon completion of CSC 112, Students will:
  • understand various ethical issues in today's digital world
  • understand various cyber security issues in today's world
  • understand the impact of technology on today's world
  • understand the world's impact on technology
  • be able to write good 2-3 page paper
  • be able to take complete lecture notes

Program outcomes for CSC 112 are:

  1. Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts. (Computing student learning outcome 3)
  2. Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal, ethical, and moral principles. (Computing student learning outcome 4)
  3. Use technology to help bring Christ to the world and apply Christian principles to their work. (Computing student learning outcome 7)
  4. Understand and use appropriate cloud technologies in specified areas (Computing student learning outcome 8)
  5. Apply security principles and practices to maintain operations in the presence of risks and threats. (Cyber Security student learning outcome 1)

Integration

  1. Note taking at the introductory level by requiring students to take lectures notes. Should include posting videos of some class lectures so they can review their technique.
  2. Technical writing at the introductory level by requiring written work to have section headers, decent size paragraphs, and giving feedback on transitions.
  3. Ethics at an introductory level by covering:
    • digital divide
    • ownership of digital material
  4. Cybersecurity at the introductory level by covering:
    • securing one's self in social media
    • the fundamental concept of cyber security

    • There will be "daily" quizzes at the end of each class where you summarize what was covered and report on insights.
      • The quiz will be available for 2 hours after the close of class. It is advised that you answer it during/right after the class
      • You may miss a total of four.
      • If you are absent from a class, you may request the quiz to be reopened for you for a 2 hour period. You must then watch the video and do the quiz. Failing to watch the video will result in a negative grade on the quiz. Not requesting to take the quiz will only result in a 0.
    • There may also be other quizzes (preparing for class, etc.) Canvas should inform you about them.
    • There are two assignments that are responding to current events. These relate to TechNews. This is a thrice weekly email that you will receive when you join ACM and it reports on currently happens in the technology field
      • The general format of the report that you are to generate includes:
        • Your name
        • The title and date of the article you are reading
        • A summary of the article (that demonstrates that you read more than what as in the email but followed the link)
        • Your response to it
        • It must be at least 1/2 page (singled space) and best if it at 3/4.
        • It is graded on a fail/low pass/pass/high pass scale (with pass being full credit)
        • It must reflect quality writing (including but limited to spell checking)
      • You must turn in your report with one week of receiving the email.
      • The first one is due by midterm and must be on a cyber security topic
      • The second on is due before the start of finals week and must be on an AI topic
  • Regular assignments
      • After each topic, an assignment will typically be given in class related to that topic.
      • The details will be given in class (not posted on the syllabus or Canvas).
      • The work will be turned on Canvas which will also have the due date.
      • The standard late policy applies.
  • Learning skills assignments. Because this course is designed for the freshmen on their first semester, it will also cover different learning techniques. You will be required to test them you and report on how helpful each is. You will also be required to maintain a checklist and ensure that it is followed all semester
      • Details about the check list will be given the first day of class.
      • Details about your experience with each technique will also be given in class when that experience is covered
 
  • Cyber project

Pre class assignment: Read the Wikipedia article on computer security. It is long and can be technical. You don't need to understand all of it. You need to also take the online quiz found on Canvas by noon of the first day of class.
