AI Use Policy for CSC 102, Fall 2026
This is a supplement to any and all campus wide AI policies
Required disclosure
As is true for AI, you must disclose how much AI was used for anything you turned in and what is did. See the bottom of this for an example.
Main idea
One of the goals for this class is to start to understand programming, so you will need to learn to program yourself and not have AI compose the code for you.
Acceptable Use
- Evaluating your writing
- AI can help you identify ways to improve. But it is important that you don't allow it to improve your writing. This is a skill that you are developing.
- Example: Here is my report on this week's program. Please indicate two areas where am I being vague. Do not provide better phrasing. That is my job.
- Aid in brainstorming ideas
- AI can really help you think of more ideas. Give it a few of your own and see what else it can come up with.
- Example: I am writing a program to do ... with a lego mindstorm robot. Please provide me five things that might cause problems that I can test. Do not give me any code. That is my job.
- Creating study aids
- AI can be a great aid to help you study. It can quiz you, organize notes, etc.
- Example: Here are my lectures notes and the previous exam from the professor in this class. Can you generate a quiz for me to help me study for the next exam.
Unacceptable Use
- Debugging code
- Learning to debug is an important skill that must be learned. At this level, the problems are simple enough that you should take the opportunity to learn those debugging skills by doing it yourself. Ask the professor if you have questions.
- Example: Here is my program and what is supposed to do. Where is my mistake?
- Summarize lectures
- It is important that you learn to listen and discern what is important from a presentation. This involves practice. (You may use this to check your work but not to do it for you).
- Here is a recording of the lecture that I missed. Please create lecture notes from it. (And do this without watching yourself.)
Faculty Use
- I may use AI to do the following. However I will never take what is said without evaluating the content to ensure that it meets my needs and is accurate. I plan to always adapt what is given.
- To help craft lectures
- To help craft assignments
- To help create quizzes
- Possibly to help create exams
- When I use AI, I will indicate that fact. By default, AI will be an aid in crafting lectures, so this will not be indicated in the future. AI was used to refine lab 7.
- I do not plan on using AI to grade or evaluate student work. It is important to me to read and evaluate all student work myself
