AI Policy for CSC 260 Fall 2026
This is a supplement to any and all campus wide AI policies
Required disclosure
As is true for AI, you must disclose how much AI was used for anything you turned in and what is did. See the bottom of this for an example.
What is allowed
- To find learning resources * AI is a good search engines. AI is embedded into most search engines and most LLM's use search engines. * Example: "Please find me 3 quality websites that discuss how to learn in the framework of Bloom's taxonomy"
- To provides ideas on what could be improved in your writing (but not to improve your writing)
- After composing work, it is helpful to have a different set of eyes to see areas for improvement.
- Example "Here is my learning report. I am working to improve the technical writing style. Please suggest 3 overall ideas on how to fix it but do not suggest how to fix. That is my job."
- To explain a specific concept
- When learning something, sometimes there is a word or concept that is assumed the reader knows and understand. AI is great at explaining that. This will then allow you to understand the rest of the material at a greater detail.
- Example: "Please explain to me what RSA is in terms of computer security."
What is not allowed
- To write summaries of a learning resource.
- Writing summaries yourself helps you learn and remember the material. By having AI do it, you are shortchanging your learning.
- Example: Here is a website that I used to learn about learning. Please write a summary of what it taught.
- To write your learning reports.
- This is very similar to above. By learning to organize your own thoughts, you will be learning the material at a deeper level.
- Example: Here are my learning reports from the past 7 weeks. Please organize them into a single report.
- To compose your learning plan
- You need to evaluate your own plan. This is best done as you compose the work.
- Here is my topic, a few resources and my final goal. Please write a learning plan that covers 15 weeks (with some buffer time) that has the following components ...
How the instructor will use AI
- When developing lectures, AI might be used to brainstorm content which the instructor would review, improve, and format as needed
- AI will not be used to grade students' work
