Terry Chi's class policy for AI use

For those who turn in their assignment at least 1 day before the deadline, they are asked to re-do the assignment if there is any AI-generated text that is above 0%.
On-Time Submission
If the assignment is turned in on the day it is due, there is a corresponding percent deduction for the percent of the assignment that was generated by AI, up to 30% (e.g., if your AI-generated % is 25%, then there will be a 25% deduction off of the final score of the paper). A 31% or higher AI-generated paper that is turned in the day it is due will be checked by 2 other AI detectors and if the trend is consistent, the assignment will be a 0 and a report of academic dishonesty will be formally filed at the dean’s office. Notes: (1) After the first incident of verified AI-generated work of any kind, the student will be required to handwrite all future work. (2) If two or more cases of AI-generated work are verified in the class (for the same person or different people), the entire class will be required to handwrite all future work in the semester.

I like that we are getting policies to post. I will add comments as needed

Beware of using AI-generation detection software!!!!!! This is not recommended as best practice because it generates an unacceptable level of false positives (one professor even got sued over it). You can use such software to flag potential problems, but then you should use another method to "prove" the cheating. I would recommend asking the student to explain what is in the document and how it was written. Have the student discuss the process. See if the work is at a similar level. There is not good technological way to do this (yet -> as of 8/16/2023).

AI-Generated Text Policy for All Class Assignments
