---+AI Use Policy for CSC 112, Fall 2026 This is a supplement to any and all campus wide AI policies ---++Required disclosure As is true for AI, you must disclose how much AI was used for anything you turned in and what is did. See the bottom of this for an example. ---++Main idea One of the goals for this class is to start to learn how to communicate in a technical way. Because of this, for this course, you will need to do your own writing. ---++Acceptable Use 1. As a search engine. * Because most search engines now include LLM's and most LLM's also search the Internet, using AI to search for websites is acceptable. It is important to confirm the information by checking the actual source * Example: Please find me 5 different websites that talk about being safe on the Internet. Note: When I did this, it gave me back some links that where no longer active. This is why you need to confirm the information 1. Evaluating your writing * AI can help you identify ways to improve. But it is important that you don't allow it to improve your writing. This is a skill that you are developing. * Example: Here is my response to the assignment (with things uploaded). Without suggesting writing changes, can you identify 3 general areas of technical writing that can be improve. The idea is to help me identify things I should look for not to fix my writing. I need to find the actual areas on my own. 1. Aid in brainstorming ideas * AI can really help you think of more ideas. Give it a few of your own and see what else it can come up with. * Example: I need to pick an area of cyber security to create a poster for to help educate a specific group of people. I want to work with ... (a subgroup of people). Two ideas I have come up with ... (two ideas). Can you give me four more and also give me three other type of groups that are similar to mine that I could consider. 1. Creating study aids * AI can be a great aid to help you study. It can quiz you, organize notes, etc. * Example: Here are my lectures notes and the previous exam from the professor in this class. Can you generate a quiz for me to help me study for the next exam. ---++Unacceptable Use 1. Composing work * Since one of the goals of this course is to improve technical communication skills including writing, you need to do the writing on your own. As mentioned above, you can use it to evaluate your writing but you should not have it do writing for you. * Example of what is not allowed: Here are the four points I want to make ... . Please compose them into a report using technical writing. 1. As only source of information * It is important to realize that answers are rarely as simple as they seem. In addition, you are trying to develop reading skills in this class. Because of this, you need to be able to get to actual documents and read them yourself and not just have AI summarize things. * Example of what is not allowed: My homework assignment is asking me to summarize the differences between two LLM's (!ChatGPT and Gemni). Please list all the differences. 1. Summarize lectures * It is important that you learn to listen and discern what is important from a presentation. This involves practice. (You may use this to check your work but not to do it for you). * Here is a recording of the lecture that I missed. Please create lecture notes from it. (And do this without watching yourself.) ---++Faculty Use 1. I may use AI to do the following. However I will never take what is said without evaluating the content to ensure that it meets my needs and is accurate. I plan to always adapt what is given. * To help craft lectures * To help craft assignments * To help create quizzes * Possibly to help create exams 1. When I use AI, I will indicate that fact. By default, AI will be an aid in crafting lectures, so this will not be indicated in the future. 1. I do not plan on using AI to grade or evaluate student work. It is important to me to read and evaluate all student work myself

---++AI Disclosure This was composed without the aid of AI
