GUI Lab: Quiz: Fall 2024

Learning Objective(s)

  • Learn to develop a GUI based program

Overview of the Program

Adapt lab 10 (the quiz program) to work with a GUI instead of being text-based

Specifics

  • The program is to be called Quiz
  • You may use the posted solution to lab 10 if you wish (be sure to indicate that in "Outside Resources"
  • You may assume each question has 4 possible answers (use a constant).
  • Use constants for the maximum number of questions and for the exact number of possible answers
  • Use a constant for the name of the file containing the first quiz.
  • There should be four buttons (one for each answer).

Sample dialogue

Since this is a GUI based assignment, you must design your own dialogue

Lab Hints

  • Hint 1: Take a GUI program from class and adapt it to this problem. Do not write one from scratch!
  • Hint 2: Use the posted solution for the logic of handling a quiz. The emphasis here is to develop a GUI (not write a quiz program)
  • Hint 3: Start with just asking each question (in order) once and output the grade on the exam.

Submission

  • Create a software development report
    • For the system design, you may use my flowchart if it is the design of your program. It is incomplete. You will need to finish it
    • For testing report,
      • adapt the testing form so that the input column could also include instructions to the tester. You should include one "picture" of the GUI to show what it looks like and then just describe the results for the different tests.
      • think about different ways users might "misuse" the GUI and test for those in addition to regular tests.
    • For the improvement section, specify how many points were lost from the last lab that you should not lose points for on this lab because you corrected the problem
    • In lessons learned, compare your solution to lab 10 to the solution posted and describe what you learned from that
    • create a pdf document from your software development report
    • create an empty zip folder
    • place only Quiz.java and your pdf document into it
    • submit the zip folder on canvas

Optional improvements

Optional improvements should ONLY be worked on once the program is completing working. In addition, the work is to be done on your own with little if any help for lab assistants or the instructor.
  1. Allow for the user to do additional quizzes after a quiz is completed. This will require additional GUI features.
  2. Have the statistics show up in a second window (and have them updated after each question).
  3. Save the program as QuizExtra.java and include it in the zip folder
